TAIHAPE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
The monthly meeting of the Commit_tee was held in the Technical School on Monday night. Present: Mesdames McCormick and Randell, and Messrs. Swindells (chairman), Shennan, Denncss, Hocking and Burrell (secretary).
A discussion arising out of the minutes took place. Mr Burrell mentioned that whilst in Vvanganui he had interviewed Mr. Swauger, the secretary tothe Board with regard to the erection of the shelter sheds etc., at the Taihape School, who stated that Mr. Hodges would be leaving for Taihape the following week. Further consideration was held over till dealing with the headmaster’s report. '
It was ascertained that a subsidy will be paid at the rate of 10s in the £ for all‘ minor expenditure in providing hot drinks for the children. The Education Board intimated that a subsidy of £l3 would be payable for fencing recently carried out rounn the grass plots, on production of vouchers. for £26. The Secretary was instructed: to furnish the particulars asked for. The I—leadmasters7 report was read‘ as follows: Owing to a certain amount" of sickness, colds with carache, bad coughs etc., the attendance has been only fair for some time. The Returned Soldiers’ Association has offered to devote the proceeds of a fancy dress ball which is to be held on August 20th.‘ We appreciate very much their kindness. The following further subascriptions have been received for the cocoa and grounds funds: Miss I-L Mitchell 105, Miss. P. McTaggart‘los, Mrs_ A. Smith ss, Mrs Burgess ss, Mr Hocking ss. I have received from Mr Swindells for our school library a very valuable book, entitled “The ‘Forest Flora of New Zealand.’ On behalf of the pupils I wish to very heartily’ thank the donor for his very valuable gift.
With regard to the sickness among‘ the children, the importance of having" the shelter sheds erected as early as possible was considered a vital necessity, and in, View of the continual dilatoriness of the Education Board, and in view of the factof .the non-arrival of the Boards.’ foreman as stated the following resolution" was _:_passed,:—That this committe deplores the Ed_ucation Board’s disregard of itsrequest re the erection of shelter sheds, etc., at the Taihape..Public School, and instructs its secretary to despatch an urgent wire to the secretary of the Board drawing attention to the continued inclemency of the weather,andi the fact of a decreased attendance owing "to sickness revealed in the hcadnlastcr’s report, and asks for an‘ immediate ViSit,fl'Olll the. Board’s foreman, Mr. Hodges to go into the question with the members of the committee.
Esoldicrs’ Association be accorded the:thanks of the Schooi Committee for" [their offer to give the proceeds of 9. : fancy dress ball to 13¢ held on the 20th [August in aid of the school library ifund. V
It was resolved that a. hearty.vote= of thanks be accorded to Mr Swvinde-11s-: for his gift to the school library_
g It was resolved that’ Mr Swindells 'be asked to prepare a report together ‘with an approximate cost-of a suitable :nlerriol'ial for presentation to the next imeeing of the committee.
| A letter was read from Mr. Shennau {tendering his resignation as a member éof the Taihapc School Committee ow,ing to his impending departure from: §Taihape. Mr Burrell and the chair§ma.n spoke of the work of Mr Shennan. fiwhilst a. member of the committee, and‘. iwhilst regretting the necesity of sevgering his connection with the school
life here, they hoped that in his new sphere he would be as ready to do as good work as he had done in Taihape.
It was resolved that Mr. Sherwin be offered the seat vacated by Mr. Shennan on the committee.
Messrs_ Hocking and Denness were appointed a visiting comittee for the month.
