THE KINGS SEVENTH SUBJECT.
A notable honour was recently conferred on the Speaker of the House of Commons by the following Order-in~ Council:——“Whel-eas it has been repre-v sented to His Mzmjesty that there should be assigned to the Speaker of the House of Coinnxons a place in the Order of Pi-uccdeiice in accord with the great dignity and importance of the high ofiice to which he is called. Now, therefore, His Majesty is pleased by and with the advice of his Privy Council, to declare and ordain that the said Speaker of the House of Commons shall henceforth, upon all occasions aiid in all meetings, except where otherwise provided by Act of Parliaincnt have-, hold, and elljOY place, pro.-eminence, and precedence inimediately after the Lord President Of the Council.” The effect of this is to raise the ‘Speaker a great many steps in the scale. Formerly he had ranked after the last created baronNOW he ranks ilnmediately before the Lord Privy Seal, and becomes the seventh subject in the realm; the 01" der being:-—The .-\l'chbisllop of Canterbury, the Lord Chancellor, the _A\,.ChbiS]~lop 03’ York, the Prime Minister, the Lord Chancellor of Ireland,‘ the Lord Pl-esidont of the Council, the Speaker.
