General Macrezidy thanked the Metropolitan police ,for their splendid loyalty. He said he was convinced that now the force was purged of discontent it would increase its great reputation_ V Four hundred policemen struck at Birmingham. LONDON, Aug. 3. ‘Conflicts occurred at Liverpool, the troops firing volleys govcrhead. A man was“ shot in the stomach. Two thousand reinforcements have arrived. A meeting of unionists resolved on -a. general strike in sympathy with the police. ~ - Liverpool is now strongly guarded with machine guns and tanks. FORTY SHOPS LO'O-TED. LONDON, Aug. 2. FOITY shops ‘were looted in Liverpool, including those of jewellers and pawnpbrokers. The streets were strewn with wreckeze. Special constables _:WeT9 13-I‘2‘ely enrolled.
