INQUEST ON THE VICTIMS. DUNEDIN, July 28_ "An inquest Was opened this aftera noon on the bodies of Duncan Mac-‘V Donald and Samuel Doherty, victims Of the fire in Cargill ‘Street on Sunday 11101111113. The evidence showed that there were 13 boarders, mostly seamen, in the house, besides eight nlembers of the household. The fire was discovered in a room occupied by 130. herty, and had a good hold. The house was not licensed as a boarding house, The medical evidence showed that both men Were badly burned. In the hospital On Sunday morning D011e1"ry admitted. he was three-part drunk. When the alarm was given‘ a m'm named Clarke fdund Doherty lying on his bed, with all his clothes on, and woke him up.‘ On arrival at the house the superintendent of the Brigade was informed that everybody was out except the proprietress, who was in the kitchen, but on going upstairs subsequently he found Doherty, and MacDonald ’s body was found shortly afterwards. Doherty informed the police on Sunday that he got out of the room, but went back to get his money. The inquest was adjourned till.Wr::l--nesday, the coroner stating that he wanted to look into the by-laws and consider the whole matter further.
