K An accident occurred at Pakarae, “near Gisborne, a. few days ago, when i a motor car went. over a. bank into the ‘river, and the ‘occupants had a narrow escape from serious injury. -It appears that a car belonging to ‘the manager of the Gisborne Farmers’ ‘Co-operative Co. (Mr E. L. Lees) was 'being driven by Mr Ensor (an emIployec of the firm) to Tologa Bay, with ;Mr Collier and Miss Johnson. At the ;bridge near Seym-0u1"S property the fapproaches are on very steep grades Iwiith a sharp bend, and owing to the gears no‘t changing quickly, the car dropped over a. steep bank ,about 4ft in height into int of water. As ‘it travelled down the slope Mr Collier jumped out, but Mr Ensor was unable to do so, and the machine fell in'to the river‘ with Miss Johnson and ‘Mr Ensor. The latter’ swam to the bank, but Miss ‘Johnson, being unable to swim, was in difficulties. She was going under the second time when one of the men, on noticing her plight, sue-ii cecded in bringing her ashore. i
