BETTING WITH BOYS.
‘Charges of betting With two lads 18 and 15 years of age respectively, were heard at the Magistrate's Court, Waverley, by Mr. Wyvern Wilson, against W. Blyde, on Thursday One of the lads Edward James McKenna, aged 18 years, stated that, with Ea younger companion he had betted Hvith the defendant for ten or fifteen himes. during the past six months. |The bets were made in half-crowns. {During the last Hawera races the boy had half-a.cl-own on a horse callled Prince Formby, with the defendant, and won seven or eight shillings. His companion, Eric Narsett, gave similar evidence. The defendant denied that he betted with the boys. and declared that he was not a‘ bookmaker. His Worship said he believed the boys, and not the defc-.ndant_. -It was a notorious thing‘ that bookmakers looked. upon fines as a license fee, and went on with th'cir calling. The fines Consequently -had to be very substantial. The dcfcndant was fined £SO \ on the first‘ charge. The second one was withdrawn.
