WOOL CLASSING.

I PQHJLAR S.UBJEC"I-‘ FOR SOLDIERS 1 ‘3hl'long -the grea'fi variety of su-bjeetsi ‘taught to soldiers by thie’Voc'2'lt.iona'Ll ‘and Educational Training Branch -of the Defence'Dcpart.ment, wool.-elassing seems to be one of the most popular. Some. of the soldiers are -takingit up "with a View to going into the wool [business when their medical treatment ‘is complete, and they can be discharged, but most -of -them‘ secure this useful _instruction with the idea of lufilising knowledge when they take up 5 land, under Governmenii assistance, and ibcc-ome farmers.‘

Mr W. T. Hambly, a wool-classiing expert engaged by the Auckland Education Board, is making a tour of ‘the North Island, giving instructions to soldiers and civilians. He made as‘ good start .with a soldiers class at. the ‘bestital at Kanio Springs. His Auckland class for "soldiers is well attended, and at Rotoruzi the soldier pupils number 18. The same expert may be engaged toigive a. course of instruction ‘to the patients -at Tl'en’fham o.rth‘opacdic hospital. His intensive course, extending over 9. t‘ortn'ight, enables the pupils ‘to obtain a good grasp of the subject. In Christchurch «:1. special ‘instructor has been appointed to hold classes for soldiers only, and the use of the wool store owned by one of the large firms has been secured. As a large‘ number of soldiers have expressed. a desire to attend, this class will be well at: ‘tended. At Hamner. where instruction is given in farming generally, a. wool-shed is being built for «the -purpose of woolsorting classes. The manager of this farm, who was f'ormerly an inst.ruc‘tor at Lincoln College, has written 3 book on the subject of wool-elussing, which he hopes the Agricultural Department will publish. A simple textbook on this branch of farming‘ knldwlcdgc would be greatly zippreciated by many soldiers who are desirous of taking up farming. M

Instruction in wool—cl:lssing for the soldicl'paHents atTimal'u is to be given at tho 'l.‘ochnic:.ll School, and here agaixl a largo class is anfici-p~a:ted. There is also a well-attellded class in the same subject at the Dunedin ‘Technical School. The interest created by those classes among returned soldiers will, it is hoped, induce ~2l‘ number of them -to settle on the land. If they be—come farmers the knowledge gained will be of su‘bstan’ri»al value when they have woolshods‘of thc-'ll‘ own.
