_.———-.__10).._..._;. The recent ‘announcement ‘that Sir Auckland Geddes, Minisfér for Recontruction. is to retire from political life in Great Britain for the purpose of accepting the position of Principal of I»1eGill University in Montreal, is a testimony to the growth of the idea of Empire in the minds of Englishmen in contrast to narrower outlook which embraces Great Britain only, writes Lieutenant-Colonel F. D. Adams, dean of the faculty of applied science at MeGill_ McGill University, the oldest imoprtant acadmeic foundation in Callada——it -will" celebrate its centenary in 192l—‘i's a private foundation; it is thus independent of all outside influences and able to carry out any educational P\“ogramme which commends itself to the governing bodies of the universit3‘r"as the soundest and most progressive, McGill draws its students from all parts of Canada, and thus, through them, extends its influence not only throughout Canada, but also beyond the borders of the Dominion. The future of the British Empire depends very largely on what is being done now and what will be done in the years wliich are immediately before us. In this period of reconstruction in Canada the unive‘rsities of Canada are in a position to play a foremost role. A 1-elzifively larger proportion of the population in Canada study at univerities -than is the case of_Great Britain, and the members of the GovCv‘ull'lf_“;ii at ilie ‘.,.;;::‘::'l‘ 13 most without. exception‘ university -men. Therefore, in View of the commanding station which MeGill occupies among the universities of Canada

no one will be in a position to influence more powerfully the development of the Canadian people in the higher spheres‘ of the mind and spirit’ than will the newly-appointed Pfincipal ofi McGill University. ‘
