HATCHERY FOR AUCKI ‘ND. . SINGLE CONTROL FAVOURED. WELLINGTON, June 25. If there are no Departmental difi’i—icultlies in the way, the Fisheries COlllmission recommends that the fishing interests of the Dominion ‘should come under the control of one Minister. The provision of a fishery hatchery in the '\Auekl'.a.nd district, !on {linjes similar to that in existence at Portobello, near Dunedin, is recommended for the consideration of the Government. ' The Commission does not recommend any alteration in the present regulations dealing with the size of the mesh of trawl ‘nets, as the present mesh apparently gives the -best general results. In‘regard to the sale of under.-sized fish taken in authorised ,nets, the __commission does not recommend tliafp sales be sanctioned. Its chief reaons are that it would not be fair to tliepublie and, further, that ‘if the vsiil"s"7Efi}":siiiall fish is prohibited trawlers would be discouraged from working in any area where they would catch a. proportion oi‘mlnclersized f.sh_ Dealing with the question oi.‘ limitation of catches. the commission. states that it was admitted by the .-'~lall.'l City Council, by Sandford, Ltd., and by the Thames Fisherie_s, Ltd., that limits were at times imposed on fishermen. This was entirely due to variations in the supply. The difficulty ‘was one which could only be overcome by the provision of a large amount of cold storage room. This would not entirely get over the difficulty. however,- as flounder’ did not lend itself to satisfactory freezing, and mullet, as compared with other fish caught in the Auckland dis,’triet, had‘ 3‘./llfllO‘.l‘o limit.:-.d market. ,l (‘fommentin'g on the inspection offlfish, the Commission says: “So long as the public is protected from having sold to it fish in a condition unsuitablelfor human consumption, we can hardly see our way to recommend the appointment of inspectors, the expense of carrying out whose duties would be a burden upon the whole industry ‘in order to facilitate the business of a small number of those engaged in the sale of fish.” The C-onrmission sees no objection to the use. of nets up to (500 fathonns-. in length. A bonus of £SOO is recommended for theproductien of the first 500 tons of fish manure I'c-aolfng the requisite‘ standard Cf quality_
