When a policeman walks with the slow deliberationftof “beat routine” he attracts more attention probably than any other nran ‘in’ the street-. When he walks fast people turn their heads and wonder‘ what ‘particular -business he has in hand. But (says the Melbourne Age) when a policemmi runs! Well, then people begin to prepare themselves for news of 3. great sensattion. And so, when two polic.enlen ran at top speed in the direction of. the North Wharf on 9, recent afternoon, i.t was not Surprising that dozens of citizens were so overcome with ex~ citemerrt that, throwing every business care and prudent consideration asid: tlrey turned and run with thenl’—or, at least, as closely as their turn of speed pe,rmitted them to do so. “Wllat ‘is it? was the cry of the bewildered but expectant crowd. On the policemen ran, and larger grew the number of their excited followers. Breathless, the upholders of the law arrived at the waters edge, and gumped on board the South Melbourne ferry just as it moved from the wharf. “Thought we’d missed it,” said one policeman, wiping off the perspiration.» On shore a disappointed crowd dispersed. '
