PROPOSAL TO FORM A UNION. BALLOT NOW BEING TAKEN. A further vote on the question of forming a. Bank Clerk ’s Union or association is at present ‘being taken,’ and the result is being awaited Witll"con—siderable intcrest by the staffs of the fval'iollg banltsin Wanganui. The bal—lot taken some months agoll'esult’ed in favour of the formation of 51 union, the main object of which was to move in the direction 0 having salaries incl'e'.l.sed, ‘but. the bank officiais who are in touch with the movement state that some opposition is now ‘being encountered, almost Wholly from the staff of the Bank -of New Zealand in various pr-.l’ts of the Dominion. It is explained by s,uppol'ters of the union movement that any union formed will have for its primary object the increasing‘ of salaries, but under the scheme it is proposed to make provision for the dissemination of knowledge concerning modern banking‘ mcth'od;<, thus educating and fostering a. Spirit of emulation among the clerks. To attain this end, it is proposed to introduce ‘:1 system of lectures on banking matters, to provide a, bankers’ magazine, and to award scholarships and prizes on a well-devised system.
