The Commit-tee of Inquiry set up -to report on certaincomplaints in regard | to the relative stiatus and pay, uliiform, rand detective branches of the police service, has presented its find.ings_ Dealing with anonl:;lie—s regarding rank, the committee states: “They were unlable to agree with the suggestion that l a. detective should rank with sergeants, I so long as they remain in the detective lbranch. This wo*ulcl‘mean that every deteetive, on appointment, was equal to a sergeant.” The commit-tee consider there should be equal pay for equal rank, with allowances to make up to detectives for their extra expenditure on clothing. The committee recommended that the rank of senior detective be substituted for that of chief-‘ detective, anld [that the rank of a detective be fixed as qual to that of a constable. The conl-nrittee further reec~mnlends that detectives be recruited from the uniform branch; that they% transfer members in the force from] one branch to another; that with re-' gard to promotion, seniority shoum be a general basis‘, but ability, merit. and general fitness for the position should be given the greatest consideration. I The committee agree that plainclothesi men should be placed under the con-; trol of the chief ‘detective, 3:31,“. at the present time they come into active competition with members of the dctective branch.
