A NOTE OF WARNING
Speaking at a banquet in London tendered to representatives of the New Zeafand Expeditionary Force who had accepted the‘ invitation of the Federation of British Industries to tour the chief manufacturing centres, Major Northcroft, Director of Education, New Zealand Force, struck a note of warning when he said that other countries, in competition. with New Zealand were entering seriously into the New Zealand markets. The. United States and. Japan‘ required to be closely watched for there was a great danger of their ousting~British manufacturers. who i.oughtv' to show more adaptability to new eondit-ions.
American firms were "prepared to cater precisely for the articles New Zealand required while British manufacturers preferred to act on stereotyped’ lines. The settled Anl'e‘rican policy was to manufacture in the be~ lief that the article would be out of date in two or «three years and he thought the ‘colonies had much .-the same mind ill this respect. As for Japan, he mentioned that before the war, New Zealand was impol'tinglal'go quantities of German laegar "deer, and within twelve months of th’e~©uthreak of hostilities Japan was sending them a laegar beer which could not be distinguished from older variety. New Zealand was anxious to trade with Great Britain if it could do so on the same terms as with other countries.
