THE TROOPS IN EGYPT.
ANXIOUS TO RETURN HOME. A New Zealand soldier, writing from Egypt on April 10,; to a relative in M 325terton, says, inter :11ia:———We seem to be marooned here, as we cannot get a ship to take us away. The people of New Zealand seem to have forgotten about us in Egypt, for apparently all they think about is the welfare of those in France and England, who, for the most part, are having a fairly good time. They are in civilised countries, and are treated well by the people, whereas we have to live in the desert with nobody to see and nowhercto go. We are anxious to get home again. Our brigade has gone down to Lower Egypt. There was a. lot of trouble with the natives, and we are supposed to be held back on that account. The trouble is all over now. so there should be no reason'for‘ keeping us any longer. We are just doing guard duty here, in the village, over the railway, principal buildings and bridges. It is not very -exciting work. We had a. general here to-(lay giving ‘us a lecture as the result of complaints we have been making-——quite proper ones. We are being better treated now. I .don’t
think our “heads” here are so much to blame. We all have an idea that the “heads’ in New Zealand are responsible for the way we are kept here, and I think we will have to get 501118 new blood into Parliamenli after this war is properly fixed.
