PRICE OF BUILDING.

The keen demand for houses would no doubt result in much more building being undertaken were it only possible to get timber and other requisites at a reasonable figure. Moreover, the price of labour has advanced in consequence of the high cost of living. A builder in town remarked to an Auckland’ Star representative that he was paying above »-award rate to some men who, he considered, put in -more work while employed. “I am paying 2/ an hour,” he said, “and ‘in some cases I know that as high «as -2/6 an hour is being paid for a. bricklayer at Hamilton.” He remarked that inland town building is literally booming at the present time, there being such a big demand for dwellings. As far as Auckland is concerned, scarcity of houses is caning more building to be undertaken, but the high cost, when completed, will necessarily mean increased rent to get. interest on the expenditure involved on land and dwelling. Painters are Very busy at the present time; in fact, difliculty is experienced in getting enough men to do the work oifering. This is really the outcome of the war. Paints and oil rose so high that during the last, four years many houscslwere let go as far as renovation was concerned. Prices’ have now eased a. little, with ‘-the result that there is a rush of work.

“Necessity makes inches of milesmole hills of mountains.”-Stamus. Way over in Sydney a lady tried to get B'a.xter’s Lung Preservel'—‘hut, fail~ ing, wrote as fo11oWs:—-“I am enclosing £2 for some Baxter’s Lung Preserver. One bottle did me such 3. lot of good in NZ. that I Want more.” And it will do you good, too. Just now, when the barometer is so restless, you should have a. large 2s. 6d. bottlao handy. Chemists and stores. 1
