CRIMINAL GANG MAKE HUGE PROFIT. LO'Z\“DON. June 9. The Daily Chronic.l'e‘s Paris correspondent states that wheninvestigating a scandal affecting 60 profitec-rs, the Food Controller -discovered that, ohfaining permits to import certain Portuguese wine, a gang altered the m=ark of origin and imported a cheap .°‘_=panish substitute. They promised an under-paid food ofiicial twenty thousand sterling, thereby securing the surreptitous insertion into the original Copy of the decree permitting the importation of Certain articles the word “Misfelles,” :1 sort of zxicoholic wine. The Minister unsuspectingly signed the decree, and thousands of barrels of “'Mistelles” were imported, =£l»]l‘d sold in a few months, one member of the gang making a profit of £BOO,OOO.
