YOUTHPUI. IMPOSTER. -. POSED AS A SOLDIER. H . WOUNDED ON THE SCIMME. DUNEDIN, June 11. A young man with an imagination which he put to base uses was before Mr Widdowson, S.M., in th«;- City Police CiOlll't this morning, on a charge of being a. rogue and a vag:abon«:l_. who imposed on :1 charitable institution. De-tective-Ser-geant Cameron, who, with Plain-Clothes Constable Beer, -arrested. the accused this morning at the Y.M.C.A. rooms, told the story which was to the effect. that the young man whose name was Albertuflarold Wil-. liam Williams, went. to the rooms of the Patriotic Assoeiatior, where the Soldiers and Dependents’ Cominittee’ was sitting, and told them that he was a returned soldier, and had been wounded at the Battle of the Somme, in 1916. He asked for an advance of money, as he was to be married. The committee advanced him £5. The ac.cused was duly married, and afterwards received :a, further ,a(lv.ance of £2, together with an order for clothing, board, ete., totalling in all £l7. On a. detective questioning the accused, the latter became a little eonfused was to his geography, as well as’ going astray in ‘his facts. He said, for “instance, that after being rejected from the Main Body as being unfit, he got. away with the Third Beinforcements, and landed -at Cairo, camping at Sling Camp. He did not go to Gallipoli].»b’e—ing ill, but on proceedinz;,t;g,,,Franee ‘lied. been wounded in the ,lmee and cheek, finally being struck on the head with the butt-end of a rifle. When he “woke up” he found himself in Brockenhurst Hospital in ‘France. Subsequently he returned to ‘New Zealand by the Port Melbourne.
Other statements made by the accused to the detee_tives were found on inquiry to be fals -. T-he police failed, for instance, to find any tnace of Mr and Mrs Williaiiis, of AndelSon’S Bay, whom the accusc-__£l claimed had adopted him, nor coul-d ‘t.héjrVfin'd‘Lany records of the accused hirnself haxvingflleft New Zealand. He had, however, been in camp from January to April, 1916, mi,del‘._tlle name of Dent. Since his discharge from emnp. he has evidently izilsely 'repre'sen’r.e‘d 'liimsc—lf as a returned wounded soldier, and not only obtained mo.net=ary attistance, but had received massage treatment for his “wound” in the knee. He went about town on crutches, and wore a Returned Soldiers’ Association badge, bearing: the number 5/940, wliich he said 110 11-ad obtained from the Association. Here was another false statement. In addition to his own paybook he had in his possession an uncnshed alirriment wi'lr—’ rant for £1 4/, made out in the .Ilil2l‘.Q efrone Fleming. M ’ ‘(Detective-Sex-geallt_Cameron. whom Athelaccused had giveii endiess trouble in following up false clues. said he looked up thepolice records, and found ‘accused had‘ been convicted of theft in Auckland in\J'une. 19I(i, aboutthe time he a.lle_.qed he wase at. the Soinme. The Rev. Cumming said that a few men were niakingr a business of this sort of thing, fa‘;.<.-r‘lj»' representing‘ themselves «as returned soldii-rs. and obtaining‘ benefits theremy. An example should be made of the accused. Accused. who pleaded guilty. said he had nothing: to say in answer to the charge. He was remanded for .3. week in custody. pending further inquiry and the probation oflicers’ report.
