TAIHAPE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

The monthly meeting of the Taihape District High School Cimmittee was held <m Monday evening last, there present: Mesdames De Latour, McCorniick, and Kandall, Messrs Swindells (chairman), Shennan," Dcnniss, Hoc-k----ing, and Burrell (secretary). . A letter was received from the Education Board with regard to a subsidy granted for the removal of clay bank, asking reason for delay in net taking advantage of same.—The secretary was instructed to supply the information asked.

The Visiting Committee reported having visited the side school at Winiata, and find that the following work is required to be carried out: Two "broken windows (25ih x 15in), one do. <l4in x lOin). One 6ft x 3ft 24 gauge sheet ircn behind stove, to guard against fire; one lock for cupboard; two locks for ante room, or alternatively, two keys, where coal is to be stored; one Champion padlock, with hasp and staple for front door; three new pans for conveniences.

The Visiting Committee for inonffc of May, 1919, have to report that the following matters required attention, and instructions have been given to have the same attended to: Two panes or glass broken In classrooms; cord to skylight in classroom; tuning of piano. Proposed by Mr Hocking, and seconded by Mrs Dc Latour, that the reports be adopted.—carried. The headmaster reported that the ■waterpipes at the school and residence needdd attention, they having been burst by the frost. He also mentioned that at the' present moment the mornings were very cold, and asked if it •was possible to get the fires attended to earlier in the morning.

It was decided to have the repairs to water pipes attended to at once. With regard to the firing,.it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the chairman to see if arrangements could b=> made for same.

The headmaster reported the receipt of a number of donations to the school fund for the provision of cocoa to the children who remain ,tit school for lunch, and for improvements to the school grounds—lt was decided that tHe donations be acknowledged through the medium of the "Taihape Times." Mr Denness moved: That there now being a sufficient amount in hand to make a start, with the issue of cocoa, that a supply of the necessary material bo procured at once, the same to be dispensed as soon as possible, and that a 14-gallon copper, with cast-iron frame be procured for this and other purposes. This was seconded by Mrs Do Latour, and carried. : Arising out of the discussion of the former matter, it was mentioned that a number of parents were of opinion that the luncheon hour was too short, and that a number of children would go home to lunch if the time were extended. ~ Mr Hocking moved: That this Com'mittcc are of opinion that the luncheon hour should be extended to U hours, and that this resolution be conveyed to the headmaster. Seconded by Mrs Eandell and carried.

Visiting Committee.—Mr. Hocking proposed and Mrs. De Lautour seconded that Mrs. Randall and Mr. Shennan be the visiting committee for the ensuing month. —Carried. Accounts were passed for payment as follows:—Hurst, firewood £5 10/; Howens, repairs to clocks, 16/; Dashwood, school stationery £4 14/2; Mrs "Wardle, school cleaning £6 # This being all the business the meeting was adjourned. THE TECHNICAL, SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Technical School Committee discussed at length the question of the apathy of the children and parents on the question of Technical Education, and it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Hocking and seconded by Mrs. Randall: "That considering the apathy of the townspeople generally towards technical matters, and with a view to this course arousing more interest, that the Technical Committee resign. and ask the Board to call a meeting of householders to elect a new committee." A division was called for the voting being 7 to 2
