EPLOSIVES UNDER HOUSE ATTEMPT ON POLICE OFFICER. GREYMOUTH, May 29. About two o'clock this morning the residents of Gireymouth were a "wakened "oy a terrifying explosion, which proved to be the result of one of the most dastardly deeds in the Dominion for many years. A high explosive was placed under the bouse of Senior Sergeant Simpson, of the police force, whoso house now resembles a building bombed. Sergeant Simpson says that he was awakened by the explosion, the swaying of the building, and falling glass. The kitchen i s in a state of chaos, the walls be;ng shattered, solid shelves torn out 'of position, and windows' blown clean out. Mrs. Simpson and her infant, sleeping in a room adjoining, were saved from the force of the explosion by (the cupboard in the kitchen and the bedroom wall. The charge was evidently placed at an angle forward iof the kitchen chimney and wall. The high explosive used shattered the bench and sink and splintered the chimney. The charge was fired by a time fuse, a large charge being used. The inmates escaped injury, but Mrs, Simpson is suffering from shock.

Amending regulations under the "Public Service Act," have been issued, authorising preference to returned soldiers. The regulations state appointments vi]} be made according to order of merit in the list of applicants who have passed the entrance examination. Provided that if any person is available and otherwise eligible who has passed the civil service senior exams, or matriculation examination, although in any of these eases ho,may not have passed the entrance exam. lie should take precedence over candidates who have- passed the entrance examination only; and provided further, that the Commissioner may if ho thinks fit give preference rb members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, hontfurably discharged, and who has passed the entrance examination or its equivalent. Applicants for positions must state' in what capacity and in what departments they are willing to accept appointment.
