HUN’S DASH FOR LIBERTY.
RUN TO EARTH BY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPION.
A German prisoner made a daring dash for liberty at • Colchester (Eng--1: rd) recently, while being conveyed handcuffed, in a taxicab to the police station.
The police officers'hud stepped out and were paying the fare when the prisoner, opening the cab door on the opposite side, made off at a fast pace along the North road.
Turning up an alley, ho jumped a wall and rushed into a house, where there was nobody in at the moment. He locked the door, and went out by the back, the police, now reinforced, till they numbered some eight or nine, in full cry after him. Jumping over hedges and walls, ho soon reached the fields.
The prisoner, who is only JB, was a speedy runner, and it was not until the police had enlisted the aid of a well-known athlete named Tasker, holder of the ten miles cross-country championship, that they were able to put an end to his flight near the'North Station, after a steeplechase over hedges, ditches, and dykes.
