RED CROSS SOCIETY.
ANNUAL REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET. The following is the third annual report of the Taihape branch, of the British and New Zealand Red Cross Society, which is to be laid before the annual general meeting on Monday night:— •
In presenting the third and last annual report, the Committee congratulates the members of the branch upon their well sustained effort to keep the lCcd Gross going to the end of the war. For it was no light task to maintain the enthusiasm of the first year, with all its hopes of immediate victory, through two more years of strain and anguish, and in the last year, which was only half way through when the armistice was signed. Over £2500 was forwarded to headquarters, and a balance was left in hand of £l5O.
During the three years of the Society's existence, over £IO,OOO had been collected by its efforts —the shop being responsible directly for £2500, £1666 being raised by subscriptions and donations, £3OOO by are union, and £3OOO by other special efforts. For this £lo,roo there was less than £l5O expenditure, or less than lh per cent; £9420 was sent to headquarters, £IOO to allied movements, and £350 was expended in the purchase of material, which was made up into 2500 garments and other hospital requirements. These figures will convey to the members and to the public generally how 'well this distritft'Tias responded to the Eed Cross appeals, and will show how splendidly the members of the braneh worked for the same purpose. The harmonious working during the •whole of the three years we are sure I'efljects 1 ton all workers and shows the confidence placed by members in your executive committee and officers.
The successful termination of the Great War is recompense enough for all our labour, and Peace will be to all a reality they in part have earned. Nevertheless, it is with a large amount of -t that the; committee views the immediate extinction of the branch, but it hopes that in the ordinary duties of peaceful life the memories of the past three years' humane and patriotic effort will be a pleasing recollection to all its members and workers.
