PRINCE OF WALES’ VISIT.
TREAT IN STORE IN CHRIST CHURCH.
CHRISTCHURCH, May 15.
A treat in store for the Prince of Wales was mentioned by the Mayor (Dr. Thacker M.P.), to-day at a Mayoral luncheon, when he stated that the sportsmen of Canterbury, were looking forward to the visit very (keenly, and he hoped it would be possible to arrange a special afternoon trotting meeting, which would be called the Royal meeting. Sir Andrew Russell, referring to (he promised visit of the Prince of Wales said before the New Zealand Division left Germany the Prince had come down and spent three days there, and saw everyone. He went .round to the different Brigades, and did exactly as everybody hoped he would do, viz., he saw a-s many of tbe men and officers as he could, and thoroughly appreciated his visit. Sir Andrew Russell added that it had been an enormous advantage to the future King to be able to mix with everybody, both men and officers, of the British, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand Forces, and others from all over the Empire.
GERMANY MAKES PEACE WITH RUSSIA. HINDENBURG’S TROOP* LIBERATED. LONDON, May 15. Tlio Daily Chronicle's Berlin correspondent reports: The whole press is enthusiastic over the National Assembly’s practically unanimous decision. No doubt the withdrawal of the German troops from Russia has had an important bearing on the situation. Rantzau formerly opposed evacuation, but he changed his attitude after seeing the terras. The withdrawal means practically peace with Russia. It will enable Lenin to concentrate against Roumania and Hungary, and liberate Hindcnburg’s 80,000 troops, and enormously strengthen the German determination to resist the peace terms. Protests ar 0 pouring in from all paits, and workers are rallying under the cry of ‘‘Slavery.” The Government’s position has been greatly strengthened.
