A DOCTOR'S CRIME.
At Belfast Assize*,', Nathaniel Osborne McConnel, who Ims carried on an extensive medical practice in Belfast for twenty years, was found guilty of the murder of Mary Jane Reid, mill-worker, aged 2-6* years, whose death the Crown alleged was the .result 'of an illegal operation. The jury strongly recommended the accused to mercy. Asked if he hftd anything to say why judgment of death and execution should not,be awarded against him, the prisoner replied that he was certainly taken by surprise at the result of jury's verdict. However, he presumed he must be content. Any suggestion or appeal' he dould make to the judge could not be so much on his own behalf as on behalf of his wife and family, as he was their only breadwinner. They would suffer more than he <*ould. Mr. Justice Dodd sentenced the accused to be executed at Belast Prison on Wednesday. April 23, and intimated that he would submit the jury's recommendation to the Lord-Lieutenant.
