PEACE CELEBRATIONS.
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE COM MITTEE.
A meeting of ithe Executive Committee in connection with Peace Celebrations was held last night. Present: Messrs. Wrightson (chairman), Thurston, Bond, Mun'ro, McLaughlan, Arrowsmith, Marlow, Cartior, Loughnan, Davies, and Donald. The question of arranging for special special trains in connection with the celebrations was gone into at length, and it was decided to run special trains as far as Hihitahi on the Monday and Tuesday at 11. J 5 p.m.. It was also decided to endeavour to run trains'
to Ohutu and Utiku at 5 p.m. each
day. A request for these conveniences is to be sent to the Railway Department, who have stated they are prepared to treat all Peace Celebrations Committees sympathetically in the matter of special trains. There will b.e no special fares. The following donations were received at the meeting: —Per H. A. Belk, Ohutu: S. Hart, £2 2/; Wilson, Winiata, £22/; J. Thurston, Ohutu £1; T. Torrey. £1; W. H. Johns, 10/; R. R. Campbell 2/6; A. Clinton, 5/; W. Goldsbury. 5/; T. Phelan. 10/; J. Casey, 10/; A. Foote, 10/; R. Suilivan 10/; H A. Belk, £2 2/. Per S. Cartier Papakai Road: Jas Smith £2 2/; Rohert Wilkie, £2 2/; D. Broome, £1 1/; S. Cartier, £1 1/; S. Shergold, £1; : W. L. Shergold, £1 1/. It was stated that the sum of £6 18/ had been subscribed by the employees at the Box: Co's Works.
The storekeepers are to be asked to assist the Committee by individually dcorating their shops in order to make as attractive a display as possible. A verbal report Was received from Mr, Marlow, organiser of the Processions Committee, in which it was stated that there are to be ten arches in the Main Street, the grand triumphal arch to be located between .the piemises of Bennett, Ltd., and the Bank of New Zealand. All other ar-. rangements were in a forward state.
Mr. Thurston reported that matters in connection with Childrens' Day were well advanced.
No reports were received from the carnival, concert,, or Sunday -Services
Committee. It was stated that, Ml'. Geo. Buckley, conductor of the Queen Alexandra Band ,had offered to help the local band in ihe matter of securing additional bandsmen. Mr. Gordon Durrand was appointed canvasser for Hiwera Road. During the discussion on financial matters it was stated that only £36 had been collected in the borough so fa.;, and Messrs MeLaughla*v Wrightson, Bond, and another were appointed to make a personal canvass of the town. The* sum of £2OO is to be spent in fireworks display, and an expert from Messrs. Mills and Co., (from whom the fireworks are to be procured) is to supervise the ararnging of the display, with the assistance of the members of the Fire Brigade.
The meting then adjourned until Friday next, at Messrs. Arrowsmith, and Loughnan's rooms, the chairman remarking as the meeting dispersed that all arrangements appeared to be progressing very satisfactorily
