The statement made in the South recently that the wollcn mills were not able to cope with orders for material for civilian clothing, is borne out by the experience of the Onehunga Woolleu mills. The manager for this cornpan stated on Thursday to a New Zealand Herald reporter that the principal, demand at present was for women's dress goods, men's suitings, and overcoatings, but this demand could not be met, owing to the dearth of skilled labour. It was stated that the fallingoff in the demand for khaki cloths, consequent upon the cessation of hostilities, had relieved the position somewhat, but there was little prospect of catching up with the existing demand for some time to come. Any one of the large New Zealand mills, in addition to carrying on its ordinary work, would require almost two yea'rs to supply sufficient material' for one suit for every one of the 35,000 soldiers who had recently returned, or had yet to be brought home.
I The matter of payment to widows I and orphans as the result of the recent epidemic, has caused much dissatisfaction at Waihi. The Miners' Union took the matter up and communicated with the Minister of Health who replied that had the Hospital Board carried out the instructions, and scut a requisition for the money it would have been paid. The Governhment did not pay money to public bodies in advance. Waihi was the only hospital Board which had caused trouble by not paying the epidemic. pensions. In regard to the above, the hospital authorities explain that when the board found that some delay would ensue before all the accounts could be sent in .they followed the example of Auckland and applied to the Minister for £(i00 urgently on account. The only financial response was by telegram stating that £.IOO was being sent that day. Payment to widows to date from .January 1, and for widowers from April 1. The question has been raised why widows should not be paid for the whole time of their widowhood.
