UNPOPULAR DISQUALIFICATION SYDNEY, May 4. J. O’Shea, the New Zealand jockey, is seriously ill with influenza. There is considerable comment in sporting circles .over the disqualification of oP. Dempsey, for two months for cribbing post position at the Moonee Valley meeting. A VALUABLE FILLY. SYDNEY, May 25. Refaction, a yearling sister to Gloaming was passed at auction at 1900 guineas. A THREE THOUSAND GUINEA COLT. The imported three-year-old, colt Spanner (The Nut—Dudu), who up to the recent Wellington meeting had raced in the colours of Mr. E. W. Alison, junr., of Auckland, was on Friday of last week sold to Mr W. Richmond, of Hastings, for the sum of 3,000 guineas. The colt in question ha s some fairly creditable performances to his record this season, and after his wins at Takapuna, Claudelands and Ellerslie. and his second to Sasanofi in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham last Thursday, it can be taken for granted that Mr. Richmond who is .one of the shrewdest judges of horseflesh in the Dominion, has not committed an error of judgment in paying such a handsome price. Prior to the Takapuna meeting in January, Spanner could have been purchased for 1500 guineas.
