Recounting his racecourse and bet- ! ting experiences in the Melbourne “Leader,” Simple Simon tells the following interesting story: I had one merry and bright experience during my quest for the Golden Fleece.. Reading in the “Leader” of a man who borrowed half a~ sovereign and ran it into over £BOO one day at Williamstown, by playing up his winnigns as he went along—“martin - gating,V I think, it is called —I made up my mind to try and bring off a similar coup after taking £g to £2 about the winner of a hurdle race at Caulifield. The “tenner” went on a horse at 6 to 1 in the second race, and home this one came. Was about to put £TO on the favourite in the next event, but, happening to see a certain ownertrainer quietly backing a 10 to 1 chance, I promptly followed. Before the start the erstwhile outsider came to 5 to 1, and, to my joy, led from Start to finish. I had some difficulty in getting tbe '£77o on the favourite for the Steepechase, and had not a few agonising moments when he was “chancing” his fences: but it came off again.
