STRAIGHT TIMELY TALK.
As bearing upon an article recently regarding the American Meat Trust, the tendency of the British Government to contract overseas meat business to the advantage of the foreigner i at the expense of the British Domini tons is referred to by the Wellington Post's London correspondent, who j quotes Sir Thomas Mackenzie, speaking j at.' a meeting of the Cold Storage and j Ice Association. Sir Thomas said j that he desired to correct a false impression which prevailed in some parts of the Old Country in reference to produce from overseas Dominions and prices charged. The overseas Dominions were not exploiting the British public, especially in the case of meat. New Zealand had sold her wool, her butter, and her cheese to the Home r people at reasonable prices, and, so far as the prices charged for meat were concerned, he would mention that they had renewed the contract on terms which prevailed in 191*6, which he quoted. He gathered from a statement made by Major Astor that the prices paid for American meat ranged up to Is Id per lb, hut he understood that American and all other meats were sold at one uniform price. It was never the intention of New Zealand to sell her splendid meat at a low price in order that high prices might be paid to American packers.
