BOROUGH COUNCIL NOMINATIONS.

It is. doubtful whether so much interest and enthusiasm in Borough affairs has ever been displayed in Taihape as that exemplified in the nominations of candidates for seats at the horse-shoe table at the forthcoming elections. For years past Municipal honours have been at a discount, on this occasion they are at a premium, and that is as it should be. No town can progress as it ought to do if no one cares whether it has a capable administration or none at all. The Municipal business needs as much, or more, pushing as any private business to succeed; its finances must be handled with as much or more care, intelligence and honesty as the finances Of any other institution or business if drift to the wrong side of the ledger is. to be avoided. The most rigid supervision of works is essential if ratepayers arc to receive value for the money they have no choice about contributing and the fact that they are compelled to find the money constitutes an unquestionable reason why they should elect a Council that has an instinctive knowledge of the value of money and of the responsibilities the position of Councillor carries. Fourteen men are nominated for the seven seats to be filled; they are all earnest men and some possess an organising and an administrative ability above the ordinary. There is a good sprinkling of now blood offering and we. trust that ratepayers will vote in accordance with the, merits and capabilities of each. The position is no man's by any right but that of election; it is not an occasion for paying compliments to friends; if the best, most capable, most, enthusiastic candidates are elected there will-be no cause to fear for the future improvement and progress of the town.
