Mr. Percy Watts, solicitor, was returned unopposed for the Mayoralty, the present mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, not seeking re-election.
TWO GERMAN ESCAPEES SURRENDER.
HAWERA this day
Two escapees, William Otting and Walter Moormeister, from Featherstorj internment camp, turned up at Hawera, where they surrendered *to the police. The men who are steamer firemen, say they have been interned for nearly four years, and) want to get back to their country to work; A few months ago they were told they would be repatriated but the orders were changed. They felt Very disappointed and disgusted, and to bring matters to a head, escaped from custody. However, they !iad ja«t seen the paper wherein it stated tka£* the Willochra was to take a party back at the end of the month. They at once gave themselves up to the police to be returned to camp and hope to be included in the "Willochra's draff j The police here -are holding the men awaiting instructions from the military authorities.
