FIRE AT WESTPORT.

o WESTPOR, this day. A big blaze took place in Westport early this morning and Penny’s palace restaurant was completely burnt downs; also Hallcnstcins Clothing Factory. No Ale’s adjoining was badly damaged and the stock ruined. Rowe, a photographer was seriously damaged and Lawson’s Shoe Shop. A brick wall saved the fire spreading up the town. Lawsoiys stock and window were somewhat damaged. Insurances; Lawson, £IOOO premises and £3500 on stock; Nollies £350 stock. Other insurance are not available. Pcnnys had a narrow escape of his life.

SUICIDE THROUGH DESPONDENCY.

AUCKLAND, this day,

Josephine Greene, 34, was found dead hanging in an outhouse at her residence at Onehuuga. She was suf-

fering from insomnia after influenza for some months, and was very despondent. AtHhe inquest a verdict was returned of suicide during temporarily insane.
