TAIHAPE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ODDS AND ENDS AT FRIDAY’S

MEETING

At the Borough Council meeting on Friday evening it was decided, on the recommendation of the Waterworks Engineer, to employ Mr Clarke, a waterdiviner. to make a survey of the Borough, to locate subterranean water veins, in order to augment the watersupply of the Borough. Several councillors staled Mr Clarke had been successful in discovering water, instancing eases at Taoroa, Pnheokahu, and Taihape. It was stared during the discussion that there were veins of water in the flat, but the main reservoir was probably the hills surrounding the town. If Mr Clarke was successful in locating water in sufficient quantity on the south side of the Borough, it was stated that it might warrant the expenditure to put in a new resei-voir. The survey will be proceeded with at once.

The foreman was instructed to preare estimates for necessary work - for the coming year for the guidance of the incoming Council. Mr A. Duncan, dog tax collector, was empowered by resolution, to collar collarless dogs, under the Act, and, if necessary, to destroy them. During the discussion on the neees-

sity of making certain improvements on the Recreation Grounds, a name was found for the building used by footballers as a dressing room. Or. Jobin,.

on several -occasions, without a sus-

picion of sarcasm, dignified this imposing. one-roomed edifice with the name of a “pavilion.’’ Previous to the opening of the Council quite an animated discussion took place round the fire in the Council Chamber on the licensing referendum, between the councillors. This was in full swing as the clock chimed 8.15, when flip Mayor, who had been seated in his chair for several minutes, quietly suggested: “Perhaps we had better proceed with the business of the Council.”

When an application for permission, to show pictures on Good Friday was being considered, Cr. .Toblin casually mentioned that religious services were held on that day, but very few attended. Ct. Dash-wood interjected: “People play bowls.” “And golf,” supplemented another eopneillor. A look of pained surprise passed round the Council table on receipt of this information.

During the discussion on the application -of a ratepayer to have a road metalled, if transpired that the road was metalled to the gate yd’ his house, which led one Councillor to caustically exclaim that he was in favour of metal to the house, but not to the pig-sty of the applicant.
