"by .the Defence Minister and Sir James Carroll. The town was gay with. .bunting. Liarge crov/ds assembled to greet the returned warriors, who

maTehed through the streets and entrained for the park, where' a "big f native assemblage, attended by representatives of the various tribes in the North Island, is being held here. They ■were received with war dances, amidst great enthusiasm, the proceedings, subsequently, according to Maori custom, developing into a tangi for those who Ead failed to return.

LIQUOR QUESTION.

CANADA'S POSITION.

According to an advt. recording an interview with, two Canadian visitors, a statement is made that the question of prohibition has never been submitted to a popular vote. Canada, as is j Australia, is a Confederation of States i In each, of these States a vote has •been taken or the country has gene dry under local option laws. Nova Scotia Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick have been dry for years. Saskatchewan abandoned State dis- ; ■pensaries by a '9 to 1 majority early '! in 1916. Bhitish. Columbia voted the j same way later in the year. Ontario J already three-fourths dry by local op- ! tion, went dry by legislative action without a single dissentient vote. Manitoba has been dry since 1916. Alberta gave an overwhelming majority early in 1916 and in Quebec 975 out of 1185 municipalities went dry under local option. Quebec City a yea:- ago adopted- Prohibition by a 2 to 1 ma-, jority, and State Prohibition comes into force in May. The Dominion Legislature simply ratifies, the decision of the various provinces. Newfoundland also voted Prohibition by 24,966 to 5348. Surely the Trade can find better arguments than this. Donot be misled by statements circulated at the Hast moment, but vote the Luquor Trade out on Thursday next.—Advt.
