The “Trade” says: The hotels were closed for the same reason as churches were closed —to prevent crowds. The Fauci is: They were closed in Auckland first, because—• “ Whisky drinkers Were dropping off like flies !” The “Trade” says: It wasn't necessary to close them at all. The Fact is: They were closed upon the advice of Surgeon-General Henderson, Lieut. Col. Makgill and Dr. Hay. The course advised by these unbiassed Medical Authorities was afterwards followed by the Medical Advisory Boards of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. The “Trade” says: The liquor bars should be kept in full blast UNTIL the epidemic returns and day after day forever AFTER the epidemic has gone in order that the people may obtain alcohol as medicine DURING the epidemic. The Fact is: That the first thing the Government would do if the epidemic returned would be to close the liquor bars as was done before. The “Trade” says: The hotels are the only source from which a supply of liquor could be obtained. Tile Fact is; The Act specifically provides for alcohol for medicinal purposes and the Government has undertaken to provide adequate supplies without charge for medical certificates. Moreover, the liquor will be of good quality instead of the doped and adulterated article so often setved. THE MINISTER OF HEALTH has in this connection made following statement: “In the event of National Prohibition being carried the Public ‘ Health Department would have to carry stocks of alcohol for medicinal purposes. 1 o pet this medicine, people would require * certificates, and arrangements would he made for Government “doctors to give these certificates free of charged' The “Trade” says: The Minister's promise cannot be depended on. The pßct is; The "Trade" and the Moderate League are the only persons who think this 1 The Act makes specific provision for alcohol for medicinal purposes. The “Trade” says: That medical opinion supports its contention that the liquor bars should be kept in full blast. The Fact is: Most doctors arc of the opinion that whisky drinker have less chance of recovery than total abstainers. LOOK— Dr. Newlands, the well -known Dunedin medico, made the following statement when approached on his return from the Annual Meeting of the Dritish Medical Association held in Wellington on March 4ih last, and which he attended as delegate from Dunedin 1. That alcohol was useful during the Epidemic when used under strict medical supervision. 2. That in the case of many so-called moderates, who would have resented any charge of drinking to excess, the disease manifested itself with greatly increased severity. 3. That, provided an adequate supplv of alcohol, both as to quality and quantity, were guaranteed by the (luveniinent, the contention of the Efficiency League that Prohibition would be beneficial both to the general health and wellbeing of l lie community cannot he reasonably disputed. Dr. Godfrey (. Vi.B.C.MEd i-hur d ) speaking recently in the Opera Mouse, i’abne.sum North, staled that "During the recent epidemic he had attended over 3uo families and saw about 1.000 patients suflVrmir from influenza. He did not use one drop of alcohol for the internal treatment of influenza, nor did he see the need for its use in any single case. Further, lie saw no path nt die who got no alcohol.” Dr. Platts-MiUs, of Wellington, speaking before the Epidemic Commission, stated that i she had known alcohol used in two cases, and in only one of 11mm had the patient i ccovered. In her opinion the lavish use of alcohol in the j Epi iemic. was distinctly harmful, it was used hy many as a panic remedy, and it was given to patients who had no symptoms cal- ; ling for st umlauts, but rather with symptoms ( indicating that stimulants would do harm. i Inherexpe ience no bad results had followed the removal of alcohol. Certainly, heavy drinkers died of the disease, and possibly the heavier mortality among males was due to the fact that males used alcohol more freely as a beverage than women did. The “Trade” says: It is concerned only for the health of the community and that the Prohibitionists care nothing whether their fellow citizens live or die. The Fact is: The "Trade’s" only concern is to sell as much liquour as it can and to let the people bear the consequences. The “Trade’s” concern for the health of the people is a sham and a fraud. It has only one concern s and that is to save itself from the death sentence which is about to be pronounced upon it . iva ■A’ i —%li '|T I^l 4- / If i, ■- VO :h The values of all staple products haw increased—their production car. also he increased by using Eclipse Fertilizer, which are relatively cheaper to-day than they were in pre-war times.
