Up till July, 1915, the licensing sys.tem in operation was along similar lines to the present New Z?amnd 'licensing system.” jThen from Julj-, 1915, the open bar was cut out, and State control introduced. State control under Government supervision operated until December, 1917, when a referendum was taken on—-(1) Prohibition; (2) State Control, The result was the overwhelming defeat of the liquor trade in any shape or form. In some of the places where the State-owned houses were doing the biggest trade the majorities against them were ties the vote was as high as ninetenths against them!—(Advt.)
