Rifleman Vincent Egan returned home on Thursday morning after two and a-half yea l " - ’ active service, and to mark the occasion his parents, Mr and Mrs J. Egan, entertained a largo number of friends at a social on Saturday evening. The gathering was held in the Box Company’s diningroom, kindly lent by Mcsdames Nicoll! and Henry, who also lent their piano. Mr W. Ashton, in a happy and appropriate speech, welcomed Rifleman Egan home, and .also congratulated Mr lin'd Mrs Egan on their son’s safe return. Dancing Ava:-' indulged in to first-class music supplied by Messrs Foster Bros. Mi*. A. Penning, Master Bert Penning, while Mrs Bland played the extras. Songs and recitations were given by Messrs. Harding, Curtis Phillips, an'd McKenzie. A bountiful supper was a feature of the evening, and hearty cheers for Mr and Mrs Egan and family brought a very pleasant evening to a close. ■Mr John Sullivan, who lately returned from the front, is at present an inmate of the Palmerston HcVpital. His many friends will wish him a speedy recovery. Mr Leslie Ross, of Tokomaru, has been visiting the scene of his boyhood 'days, >and was staying with his grand-parents, Mr and Mrs Herman Ross.
The annual meeting of subscribers .to our library is to be held on Wednesday evening. A hearty invitation to all readers to be present is given, and the committee hope for a large attendance.
