A YEAR SAVED.

The law provides that when a poll for rating on unimproved value is taken and the proposal is carried, it shall come into operation on the 3lst March next after having been notiTieu in the Government Gazette. It will be seen that there was some questio:; whether this Borough, after carrying the poll ou the 26th March, coivki succeed iti having the result gazetted before the 31st. The poll was dclarea on the evening of the 26th March but by the kinowledgd (promptness, and administrative capacity of the Town Clerk full results and particulars o? the voting were in the hands of tnc Government Printer, and of the Minister, in Wellington, in time to be published in the Gazette issuerd on the morning of the 27th March, -tiius enabling rating under the newly adopted system to commence Iron-. next Monday, the 31st March. The Town Clerk was limited to abos: twelve hours in having his documents prepared and in transmitting tncift complete through the proper legal channels to publication in Wellington, and we are not quite sure that this rs not a record in performances of the kind. Anyway, the Borough of Taihape is indeed fortunate in having so able an administrative officer ana the Town Clerk has certainly earnecr the congratulations of all ratepayers, whether they voted for the proposal or not, more especially as it was only the night hours in which the Gazette notice had to be sought and achieved. On Wednesday night the result was transmitted to Wellington, on Thursday it appeared and on Friday official notice wits received by the Tovr;i Clerk that the result of the poll appeared in duo order and form. We off-?'-our congratulations to Mr. Menzlcs an such promtpness, Avhicli was on»y possible through his possession of the requisite knowledge and experience.
