An unusual case was outlined in the Dunedin Police Court yesterday, when Joseph French, was charged with obtaining £153 by false prtences. It was stated by the police that the accused represented himself as a single man and obtained various sums from a widow, under promise of marriage. The eagre was adjourned to enable witnesses for the defence to bo called. Over 1000 returned soldiers will arrive in New Zealand about the middle of next month by the Kaikoura from Egypt. The vessel is calling at Hobart on route, and is due there on April 10. She is bringing 317 men for Auckland,, 296 for Wellington, 26 for Gisborne, 34 Napier 16S for Canterbury 43 for Picton, and Nelson. 16 for West- Coast, 167 for Otago, and 46 for destination not stated. It is reported in Wanganui that land aggregation is taking place extensively in that district. This is said to be particularly bad in the Main Trunk district about Mangawcka and Huntcrville, and the former township is suffering in consequence. It is noticeable that along the main roads between Wanganui and Feilding there are quite a number of farmhouses standing empty and desolate, the surroundings suggesting thae until recently the houses wore centres of properous husbandry. St. Dunstans’ Review lias the following story, which it states was told by General Townshend. It concerns an English Tommy, an Indian sowar and a. German prisoner whom the latter was guarding. For lack of something better to do during the closing weary days of the siege of Kut these three made a bet as to which would stay the longest in a native goat house, on the outskirts of the town. The Tommy was the first to enter but came out in half an hour and was violently sick. The Indian went in next, hut he had to seek the open air in forty minutes. The German went in last, and after five minutes —the goat came out.
