Just before the Borough Council adjourned last night Cr, Reid proposal that the Town Clerk’s salary be increased by £SO a year’. He spoke in highly eulogistic terms of themaancr in which' Mr Menzies had cjjp|oufc hia duties. His capable ot the Council’s business was a p?oof o his ability. Any- Information require was# always avandble on application to the Town Clerk. | The Mayor said he had great pleasure in supporting the motion, for this reason: Mr Menzies had saved the borough mhch more than £IOO during the last twelve months. The incoming Council would have the benefit of Mr Menzies ; ripe experience and advice, and it was'good business for them to make it worth while for Mr Menzies to stay with them.. When he (the Mayor) goes out of the Council and becomes a private citizen, no matter what the Council was he would not have the slightest disquiet knowing the executive wo-rk. of the Council "was in such very capable hands ats those of their Town Clerk.
Cr. Joblin said the Council wore extremely lucky to have Mr Meuzies. Me (the speaker) always took it for granted that 'everything connected with the borough would be well looked after by Mr Menzies. Or. Cunninghame supported the motion, saying there wa§ not a ratepayer in the borough who did not appreciate Mr Menzies’’services. Cr. Wrightson endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers, saying that fMr Menzies they had got a good i, and they knew it. He hoped ; with the new Council Mr Menzies w'ould got a good boss. Cr. Turnbull also briefly spoke in appreciation of the many valuable services Mr Menzies had rendered the Council.
The motoon was carried unanimiuosly amidst applause. Mr Menzies returned thanks to the councillors for the expressions of appreciation they had voiced. He was taken quite by surprise; he had no id:a this motion was coming on. He had only dene what ho considered to he his duty. He may have failed in some respects, but it was nof in the he took in the Council, and his desire to safeguard their interests. Ho assured them that he would continue to give the best that was in him to the service of the Council.
