On Monday next, St Patrick’s Day, Mr Boughton’s shop in Station Street will be closed at 1 pan. The public arc notified that H. D. Bennett Limited will close their business premises at St. Patrick’s Day, next Monday, at 1 p.xn. Owing to continued illness Mrs. Drew is compelled to relinquish her Hautapu Tea Rooms business, which is now advertised for sale. It is notified by advertisement that all solicitors’ offices in Taihape will be closed on Mondoy, March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. Messrs W. J. White and Sons are holding a great Winter Show of millinery, ladies’ coats, etc. A splendid selection has been received, and is now being displayed. A 15 cwt. Russell motor lorrie is to be sold by auction at the Taihape stock sale by Dalgety and Co., on 26th March. It is an English made lorrie, and has most modern fittings.
As engine-driver, with Ist class certificate, is wanted by the Taringamutu Sawmills Company. A man used to wood firing with wood cut into suitable lengths is preferred.
At the Tui Street Auction Mart, Messrs Ward and Co. will sell to-morrow a quantity of corrugated iron, ladies’ and children’s boots and shoes, fruit, vegetables in season, and a quantity of useful furniture.
The Palmerston branch of the the Associated Society of Railway Servants has decided to throw in its lot with the other branches of the Society of New Zealand in an endeavour to bring about a universal eight hour day.
Giving evidence before the Epidemic Commission at Wellington, Dr \ alentine |said he had been j.’Very much impressed with the extraordinary number of seamen who went down with the influenza. He was strongly of opinion that there was a call for better accommodation 'pnd more sanitary conditions for crews aboard ship.
“I am very sorry to say that the Japanese stockingette is far superior to the English,’ said Mr. M. P. Murray in giving evidence to the Parliamentary Industries Committee on the textile bag trade. He was stating that the wraps for freezing works were made from stockingette which his firm imported from Manchester and Japan.
“There are to bo no Territorial camps this year,’” said the Minister of Defence to a reporter on Saturday. I wish to repeat the statement, which I have already made on a number of occasions in order that the public may be under no misaprehenSion in regard to the matter. There may be some special camps for the training of officers and non-commis-siouod officers, but there will be no Teritorial camps.’
