THE STRAND INCIDENT WHO WERE THE CULPRITS LONDON, Mcrah 13. An American Commission is inquiring into Sunday night’s riot. The soldiers protest against the action of the Y.M.CA. Hut officials in summoning the civil police to disperse the dice players instead of the American military police. They also complained that innocent onlookers were arrested —the actual players escaping. Scotland Yard upholds the police action. It denies that policemen lost their heads, using their truncheons violently and knocking down civilians like ninepins. The Americans offer regret that the newspaper version attributes the blame solely to American soldiers, whereas photographs show that the ringleaders were either English .or colonial. It is denied that American military police brandished revolvers.
One English soldier and three Canadian soldiers at Bow Street were charged -with obstructing the police outside the police station when the crowd attempted to rescue the Americans. Two were fined £2 each, and two wore remanded.
