The Taihape Daily Times. AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE

FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 1919. LABOUR AND BOLSHEVISM.

(With which is Incorporated The Taihape Potrt and WalEmrlao News).

Industrial troubles are now tbo world’s greatest disturbing element, for, judging by the vapourings of a Mr. Semple, M.P., Bolshevism and Sparticism are latent developments or excrescences of the labour or industrial problem. We do not so regard them, we look upon them rather as anarchy and nihilism under another name, those curses camouflaged to render them less repulsive looking, for anarchy was never more diabolical or nihilism a more horrifying and frightful a character. We are convinced from mature experience of labour matters that the purveyors of Bolshevism, Sparticism, and Fenianism in this Dominion are the greatest danger to labour, as well as to this and all other social States in which the red-handed arc not privileged to rob from his neighbour and kill if he is opposed, to enter family life and by force break up, take away its members at will, whether it be wife or daughter. On the assurance of Semples, labour organisations are staling that the condition of women in Russia is not as officially reported, that, Kerensky and the lady captain of the Russian Women’s Brigade arc liars; that the almost daily reports of the horrifying happenings in Russia are baseless; that the statements of British and New Zealand officers are mere contemptible verbiage with no shadow of truth behind them; that the bloodthirtiness and moral depravity of Russia is the brightest spot in the labour firmament, while all the nations of the earth know it to be the greatest danger to civilisation,

while some fear that it may oven drag the world down lower than it was in the darkest ages, oil know it to he the blackest blot of infamy and license with which the world has over been afflicted. It seems that the credibility of a portion of New, Zealand is fitted to the boldncs of the liar. While Britain and New Zealand have little fear of anything hut an extraneous anarchy, we may well and profitably inquire from all sources what the conditions arc in those countries where Bolshevik and Sparticist bands of robbers of money, virtue and honour ceaselessly work with no superior law to limit their blood-curd-ling savagery. Is Labour better off in Russia under Bolshevism than in America or Britain under those understood laws and usages that arc essen-' tial in ensuring the life of the weak against the strong, of the safety of the individual against bands of murderers, ravagers and brigands? Bolshevism claims to be supreme in Russia, but where are the signs of its beneficence, where are the indications of the heaven upon earth some New Zealanders are ; oolish fcnough to believe on the word of a Semple? Moscow is the capital of Bolshevism, how docs it compare from labour’s point of view with London, New York, 'Auckland or Wellington? It is beyond all truthful denial the darkefl pit of damnation on earth that any nation in any time of the world’s history has ever become enveloped in. If Russia under Bolshevism is as Mr Semple says it is; if Bolshevism brings in its wake the labour milieu ium Semples hoodwink the people into believing It does; if Bolshevism institutes the paradisic conditions Semples claim for it, why, in the name of everything that is logical and reasonable don’t the Semples and their Bolshevik proselytes emulate the Mormons and sail straight away to the arms of their Lenins and Trot-

skys as Mormons rush ipto the arms

of their Joe Smiths and Brigham Youngs? The fact is that there is only room for the Lenins and Trotskys in any country given to Bolshevism, and the Semples are waiting and working, rather impatiently, to become the Lenins and Trotskys of New Zealand. In the Bolshevik paradise the high priests of the cult are everything and theii redcoatcd minions can do no wrong, whatever their depravity and ignorance .-lead their brutal minds to be set upon is the privilege of their service. The Lenins and Trotskys take unto themselves all gold and keep printing p'resses~*at work printing millions of paper roubles day and night. Only those who can get away with the secreted gold are enabled to get out of Russia, for, of course, the printed roubles are valueless .where .the blood red rule of Lenins and Trotskys ends. But there is ample scope for Semples and their converts to go into the country of Bolshevism, and if they have any gold their welcome will be in accordance with the amount it totals, for they will be compelled to accept paper roubles in exchange for it. We wonder what Lenin and Trotsky would be to-morrow if they were finally cast down and new "high priests of Bolshevism were set up in Russia. Why, of course, they would at once proceed to some other country where labour would be foolish enough to let them assume the positions of high priests over them. Russia would be no place for them, and so it Is sc.m that the Semples can only worsh'p the god of Bolshevism in Russia from a. good safe distance; Russia is no safe Mecca for them to visit.

People who boast having no faith in anything good in heaven or earth fall like putty under the wildest and most extravagant lies of the Semples. They have the same information about Russia that Semples cap only get, ret 1 they listen to Semples and distrust their own senses. These people arc not a help to labour’s cause; they are a deterrent; they help;: the Semples to place machine guns in our to shoot down our women and childr ren, and lend unconscious aid to the Semples while they exploit the country of everything whereby they can only, even, live. It is sheer lunacy to disregard the true nature,, of,. Bolshevism and Sparticism; let every man and woman answer the question for themselves: “What has 'Bolshevism done for Russia and what has Sparticism done, and is doing, for Germany” Lot them realise what the nature of the cult is that would establish its dominion over mankind by unlimited spilling of human blood, whether it be Prpssianism, Sparticism, or Bolshevism. Let Mow Zealand labour retain its really magnificent traditions and go on linking up all workers in peaceful organisations, pursuing a process of education of the public until a Government can bo put into power by peaceful, constitutional means. To be led by the ravings of revolutionaries ‘an aever improve, two wrongs can never make one right

no matter how Semples conjure with the word. Is the Russian Bolshevik paradise free from profiteering and plundering of the masses? In all that is true. No! In that land which produced food to feed the greater part of Europe the workers are homeless and verily dying of starvation in thousands; would Now Zealand labour change its conditions with Russia labour on the anarchic ravings and promises of Semples. The time is at hand when by brotherly association the nation’s whole history of wrong-doing against the masses can be ended at the ballot box. Let us remember t that there are many noble men to-day as there have been in the past, the Taihape district should - ho proud that it is not devoid of fnem. There are the Carlisles and Ducies, and there still the modern Bishop of (leyno. the Dr. Woodward, who two centuries ago wrote. “If the poor man’s rich neighbours are not bound in justice to provide competent memtenance, by what right did they take upon themselves to enact laws which compelled that man to become a member of their society, which precluded him from any share in (he land on which he was born, or any dominion over the beasts of the field, on pain of imprisonment, stripes or ’death. The Bishop of Cloyne stated labour’s case of to-day two hundred years ago, but would any man with one scintilla of love for his race encoirt*age workers to adopt some ism as a shibboleth and to commence thereunder with machine gun, bomb, arid sword an orgy of mutual destruction?
