MOTOR-CAR SPEED LIMITS

It has be)c-n a frequent matter of comment from .."visitors to Taihape the excessive speed at which some motor car and Ipioto* pike drivers rush through the strelots of the town. Even going round corners the sped has been too fast for safety. This practice of fast driving has been impressed %n the Borough Council, vnd the matter was ventilated at the Council table last night. Cr. Turnbull said he wished to draw attention to the excessive speed with which motor cyelisfs rushed through the town. At lor of young fellows got machines, and their methods of riding them constituted a danger to the town. TTis Worship remarked that a motor passed him the other night going very fast. Another one had no lights.

Cr. Turnbull said he saw two young fellows careering through the town at the rate of 30 or 40 miles an hour, Cr, Wrightson noticed a motor ear pass up the Main Street this afternoon at the rate of 35 miles an hour It was time sora'fthing was done to etop this practice of fast driving. If it is persisted in there will certainly be a serious accident sooner or later. Ci. Eeid had also noticed' som'e very fast', driving—quite 25 miles an hour.

Cr. Cumiinghame was somewhat sceptical about the speeds mentioned by- some of the councillors, though he admitted there was a tendency to exceed the limit of safety. He suggested that notice boards should be erected in various parts of the town. The Mayor said it was a matter for the police to take in hand, and quoted the law on the subject—Section 9 of the “Motor Regulations Act.” Cr. Turnbull moved that the- attention of the police be drawn to the excessive speed of motor cars and motor cyclists.—Carried. Cr. Cunninghame also moved that signboards in suitable places fixing the speed at 15 miles an hour—Carried. A “nod should be as good as a wink,” to those pace fiends, and if they want to “go the pace” they should go to an unfrequented road in the country, where the only danger will b" to their owlT“hecks.
