BOY GUNNER’S GALLANTRY
When the Germans were attacking Armontieros they were held up by a machine gun detachment of the 34th Division. Again and again they tried to advance only to be mowed down. Af last when the position was surrounded, a Prussian officer advanced bearing a white flag to invito surrender in what must ultimately prove a hopeless contest. Ho found all the machine gunners but one lying dead, and this a mere lad. Speaking in English he asked him to surrender, promising him kind treatment as a bravo man. The lad answered that he meant to die with his comrades, and advised the officer to retire as ho valued his life. This ho did, and the cordon continued to pour bullets info the post until the solitary machine gun was silenced. The Germans were profoundly impressed by the magnificent act of heroism, and appear to have told the story widely.
