The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. D. S. MacDouald, has informed the North Canterbury Farmers' Union that the representations made regarding the 1918-1919 wheat crop were carefully considered by the Cabinet. It decided to adhere to its previous decision that the price should be 6/6 per bushel for good milling wheat. The Minister states that the scheme of handling adopted last year will be continued for another year.
A modest lawyer was encountered at a meeting held the o'tlicr evening. A certain company had failed to take delivery of certain goods for the body in conference, and portion of the shipment was destroyed. The chairman explained the position, implying that the fault lay with the defaulting company. "I don't think we should take on a lawsuit if we can avoid it." said the barrister. "I see there they have put in a bill for 17/6, so I think the best way to squarematters is not to pay it, TbeD if they are not satisfied tuey can sue us." The surprising diplomacy was adopted, and the meeting members contentedly smiled satisfaction at the easy waj( out by turning attack into defence.
Shortly before midday on Thursday, a shocking accident occurred at Gamman and Co.'s mill, by which Reginal Pike, an employee, lost his life. The deceased, a busman, was engaged rolling five heavy logs, down a slight slope towards the hauler. He successfully started the f'vst one, and found the next held up by a piece of timber which waa blocking it. Getting on top of the log ho removed obstruction, Thinking perhaps it would not get away until be was clear, but it started suddenly and he fell, the log passing ovsr him, and the three others in succession crushing him to death. The aecicl.mt happened so suddenly that any effort to save his life was impossible. Tho deceased was a married man, about 35 years of age. His wife, for whom great sympathy is felt, survives him and three children.—Ohakune Times.
