STOLEN BRITISH SECRET. The theft of a, British secret by Germany was described by Professor Bayliss in a speech at University College, London. In November, 1915, Professor Bayliss advocated at the Royal Institution the use of gum arabie in physiological experiments. Last May a captured German circular advised that the“use of gum arabie, as suggested by Professor “Kessler,” wias preferable to blood tranfusion in cases of wound shock 'There has never been such a person as ‘Professor Kessler, ” Professor Bayliss added. General Sir Wilmot HcvVingham said Professor Bayliss had saved the lives of thousands of men. An injection of gum had been given in steel ambulances close up to the firing line and within an ( hour of wounds being received.
CHURCH'S VIEW 0£ SUICIDE. Referring to the revision of the Prayer Book, Dean Inge said there had been much discussion on the denial of the burial service fo those “who laid hands on themselves.” It seems to me,” said Dean Inge, “that suicide differs profoundly from .murder, and I do not think it ought to be treated as such an awful crime. Persons who take their own lives are seldom criminals, and are frequently very estimable people. They are often victim© of nervous depression which does not amount to madness, but which they are not able at the time to resist. I have often felt that prohibition of the Church of England service to those who have taken their own lives in a fit of depression is a harsh measure which cannot ho justified.” '
