LAUNCH CAPSIZED.

FATALITY AT WHAKATANE, WHAKATANE, February 12. At Whakatane Heads at dusk last evening, a 24ft launch owned by Wharewera, a native fisherman, and carrying Wharewera and four other natives, also Mr. Phillip Orchard, the wellknown contractor, capsized while entering the harbour througS the boat channel.

- There was a heavy easterly sea at the time, and this was responsible for the disaster.

All the natives managed to reach tho rocks nearby, and thence the shore, but, according to Wharewera, Mr. Orchard, though at first seen striking out for the shore, later disappearedThe tide was then setting out Of the harbour.

Mr. Orchard bad just completed arrangements for delivery of stone from Whale Island for the Whakatane har-

bour works. The launch was coming from tho Island. He leaves a widow and son about IS years of age.
