CELLULOID INLAYS FOR DEFORMED NOSES. Burgeons arc frequently called on to repair noses that have been broken or otherwise deformed through the loss of some of the bone needed to support the nasal tissues in shape. The practice has been to replace the missing bone with a piece of cartilage cut from a rib, which made the operation very complicated. A leading surgeon is simplifying this operation by using strips of a material which is a form of celluloid largely used in the manufacture of toilet articles, in place of ' cartilage. He experimented first by inserting the strips in the noses of animals, and found that they were a perfect inlay, remaining unchanged and in shape indefinitely. He has since repaired many human noses with perfect success. His method of operating is to cut from a slab of the material a piece of about the size and shape needed. This is soaked in hot water, trimmed with scissors and perforated with many small drillholes. Then a pocket is cut in the nose from about where the spectacles would rest down to the tip, the insert is slipped in,’ and the small wound sewn up. The nose soon becomes normal.
