ROMANCE OF A WAITER.
The romantic story of a , young Swiss waiter who rose to become the most famous hotel proprietor in the world was hinted at at the annual meeting of the Carlton Hotel, Ltd., It was announced that Mr Caesar Ritz, the founder of the London hotel which boars his name, died in Lausanne on October 26. Mr Ritz who retired from business ten years ago on account of ill-health began his working life-as a waiter. “It is ia story of wonderful progress, ’ ’ said the manager of the Ritz Hotel, “Mr Ritz had no greater opportunities than other boys of his age and station, but he was ambitious He worked hard in Switzerland and France, saving all he could.
“It was he who created the hotel do luxe. The Ritz Hotel in London was founded by him, and he was the first managing director of the Carlton Hotel, which remains one of the most exclusive hotels in existence.”
