FIRE IN BISCUIT FACTORY.
AUCKLAND, this day.
A fire on the premises dr Bycroft, LtcT., in the Shortland Street building, destroyed the front porition of the biscuit factory. At the rear the expensive plant and stock of biscuits escaped damage except by water soakage, which is fairly extensive. The stock of flour is believed to have been destroyed, and the grinding machinery recently installed at a cost of £4OOO. It is impossible to estimate the full damage yet, but it is stated Tt 'is reasonably covered by insurance in the New Zealand Insurance Office.

INCREASE IN WAR PENSIONS.

An avalanche of applications has been launched upon the War Pensions Department during the past month; 3547 have been received from soldiers between January 4 and 3lst. The reason for the sudden increase no doubt Is due to the larger number of men returning.
BLACKBALL TROUBLE SETTLED.
GREYMOUTH, this day
The Blackball trouble Has been practically settled. The men and owners held a conference and work was resumed to-day under normal conditions. The trouble was referred to the districts committee.

Mr. Donald Read, senr., who was a member of the Stafford anJd' Atkinson
Ministry in the seventies, died at his home, Green Island* this morning.
